Hawkins Takes His Campaign to New York City This Week

Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for governor of New York, will be campaigning this week in New York City from Tuesday, May 29 to Monday, June 4, meeting with displaced tenants, home care workers, criminal justice reformers, climate activists, and Green Party members.

Hawkins will be available for media interviews all week.

Among the activities on Hawkins’ schedule are:

Tuesday, May 29

2 pm - City Limits podcast interview in Brooklyn

7 pm - Meeting of the Green Party of Brooklyn

Wednesday, May 30

11 am to 8 pm - Hunger Strike Against De Blasio’s Collusion with Landlords & Developers

City Hall entrance, Broadway and Murray St., Manhattan

Hawkins will fast in solidarity with hunger striking tenants evicted from 85 Bowery. The action is sponsored by the Citywide Alliance Against Displacement and the Coalition to Protect Chinatown.

Hawkins will be available in the afternoon for interviews at the hunger strike or elsewhere in the city.

Thursday, May 31

Friday, June 1 to Sunday, June 3 – Left Forum

Hawkins will participate in the Left Forum at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, 524 W 59th St, Manhattan. The Left Forum is an annual gathering of a few thousand activists for a scores of panel discussions. It begins at 4 pm on Friday and concludes at 6 pm on Sunday. Hawkins will speak on four panels and host a campaign fundraiser near the conference:

Saturday, 2-4 pm: Unity and Power through an Independent Left Party

Speakers include Gloria Mattera, Co-Chair of the Green Party of New York State and Bruce Dixon of Black Agenda Report.

Saturday, 4-6 pm: The Left and American Politics: How to Build Independent Political Power

Speakers include Gloria Mattera, Co-Chair of the Green Party of New York State and Gayle McLaughlin, former Green mayor of Richmond, California and independent 2018 candidate for Lt. Governor of California.

Saturday, 8:30-11:30 pm: Campaign Fundraiser

Perdition Bar, 692 10th Ave, Manhattan

Sunday, 12-2 pm: Green New Deal and Ecological Socialism

Speakers include Mark Dunlea, 2018 Green candidate for state Comptroller; Jabari Brisport, 2017 Green Party candidate for District 35 City Councilor; and Jill Stein, 2016 Green candidate for President.

Sunday, 2-4 pm: Organizing the Fight for Public Education

Speakers include Jia Lee, 2018 Green candidate for Lt. Governor; Brian Jones, 2014 Green candidate for Lt. Governor; and Lois Weiner, Director of the Urban Education and Teacher Unionism Policy Project at New Jersey City University.

Monday, June 4

7-10 pm – Climate Action Monday

An informal gathering of climate activists. This week’s gathering will honor the Albany 55, arrested for a sit-in outside Governor Cuomo’s office demanding 100% clean energy, no new fracked-gas infrastructure, and making polluters pay for their damages. Hawkins is one of the Albany 55
