New York State Board of Elections: December 14, 2018

The New York State Board of Elections posted the certified election results on December 14, 2018 after counting all the absentee and other paper ballots and canvassing the voting machines. You can see the county and statewide results here.

Our final vote total was 103,946. In 2014, we received 184,419 votes.

The biggest drop offs were liberal college areas (St. Lawrence, Tompkins, Ulster counties), where Cuomo seems to have got the anti-Trump Democratic vote, and the capital district, where public employees had given us the most votes in 2010.

Our smallest drop-off upstate was in the Buffalo area, where local Greens organized several good events and we received the Buffalo Teachers Federation endorsement. Our drop-off was also much smaller in Orange County, home to our Attorney General candidate, Michael Sussman.

In the New York City area, we almost maintained our 2010 vote in Brooklyn and actually got slightly higher votes in the Bronx and Queens. The rest of the metro area declined roughly proportionately with our overall decline.

Congratulations to all of us for achieving our baseline goal in this election – retaining the Green Party ballot line statewide for the next four years.

Vote today as if our lives depended on it. They do.

Today is election day. Polls are open to 9 PM.

Please vote Row D, Green Party. Most important is our ticket of Howie Hawkins and Jia Lee. Only votes for Governor / Lt Gov count towards the 50,000 threshold needed to continue as a ballot qualified party, which makes it much easier for us to field candidates.

Our other statewide candidates are Mark Dunlea for Comptroller and Michael Sussman for Attorney General. We have more than a dozen Greens running for Congress, State Legislature, City Council and Mayor of Lockport. Read about them here.

Today is also Divestment Tuesday. Mark’s campaign has focused on climate change, starting with the need to get the state to Divest its pension fund from fossil fuels. A vote for Greens is a vote for divestment and climate action.

Call NYS Comptroller Tom DiNapoli at 518 474-4044. Script: Please divest the NYS pension from fossil fuels. The NYS Attorney General is suing Exxon for defrauding investors like the NYS pension funds, so why would the Comptroller keep investing in such companies? It is wrong to invest the pension fund in companies that are destroying the planet through global warming.

NYC Kids PAC have endorsed Howie Hawkins and Jia Lee due to their outstanding positions on the education issues most public school parents care about, whether it’s keeping the cap on charter schools, more equitable education funding, reducing class size or reforming mayoral control; Jia, in particular, is a NYC teacher and has testified eloquently before Congress on the damage done by high stakes testing.

If you are at a polling place that is the correct polling place for where you presently live at, and the poll workers says you are not listed as a registered voter, you should ask to fill out a provisional ballot, known as an affidavit ballot.

Please remind your friends and neighbors about the importance of voting green.

By voting Green Party on this Election Day you will make sure that we can field independent candidates who take no corporate money, who are teachers, teamsters, college students. Pushing the Democrats who get elected to take the progressive positions they talk about happens when Green Party vote totals are good.

They say New York is a Democratic Party stronghold yet it has the largest gap between rich and poor; the most segregated school system by race and class. New York needs a Green Wave to move our elected officials to care about all of us.

Howie Hawkins Says He is the Progressive Candidate for Governor
Calls for 4 Regional Debates

I congratulate Andrew Cuomo on his primary victory and Cynthia Nixon for raising progressive alternatives.

Now that the primary is over, I look forward to a robust debate with Cuomo, Molinaro, Sharpe, Miner, and Nixon, if she chooses to stay in the race.

In particular, I will go beyond Nixon in the general election debate to put forward the eco-socialist policies we need for real solutions to the serious problems we face.

We need 100% clean energy by 2030, not 2050, to address the climate emergency.

Universal rent control is pointless without repeal of the Urstadt Law so that cities, not the state legislature, set their own rent regulations. And rent control is not enough. We need to radically expand public housing in order to make affordable housing a reality for all.

To provide every child a good education, we must not only fully fund high-poverty school districts. We must also desegregate New York’s most segregated schools in the nation and Opt Out of high-stakes testing that are used to evaluate teachers and use to put high-poverty schools into receivership and privatization as charter schools.

After the primary debate which largely ignored upstate New York and many critical issues starting with climate change, I proposed four regional debates (NYC Metro area, Capital District, Central NY and Western NY) to each focus on a topic area: The Economy, Government Reform, The Environment and Climate, and Social Policy, including education, health care, housing, transit, criminal justice, and civil rights.

Unlike the primary debate, the rules should be determined by all of the candidates and the media, not just Mr. Cuomo.
