Green Party to Call for Increased School Funding, Desegregation
Oppose High-Stakes Testing, Privatization, Charter Schools
Howie Hawkins and Jia Lee, the Green Party’s gubernatorial ticket, will hold a news conference in the LCA press room of the Legislative Office Building to discuss their education policies. The Greens will also respond to the recent Janus court decision on union dues.
Lee, a NYC public school teacher and recent candidate for UFT president, will call to end the racial, class, and academic segregation in public schools. The Green Party candidates advocate the scrapping of standardized tests to evaluate, rank, and allocate or deny resources to students, teachers, and schools.
The Greens will call for increased state funding for education to comply with the Campaign for Fiscal Equity decision.
Lee will discuss her upcoming trip to Puerto Rico to meet with and support local teachers dealing with the working and school conditions there in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.
The Green Party has long opposed charter schools as undercutting public education. Charter schools have often been used as cash cows by hedge funds and other investors taking advantage of favorable tax provisions.

The Green Party has long called for a Green New Deal which supports full employment through a variety of programs, including transitioning to 100% clean energy by 2030 and halting all new fossil fuel infrastructure. The Greens support a state carbon tax and a goal of 100% of all new vehicles being zero emission by 2025.
Mark Dunlea, the Green candidate for Comptroller, is calling for the state pension fund to be divested from fossil fuels, as NYC voted earlier this year to do.

Hawkins will also be available to answer any questions related to the campaign, including recent 4 to 5% showing in a Zogby poll; Green New Deal and democratic socialism; and political corruption.

For immediate release: July 17, 2018
Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for Governor, will hold a news conference in Syracuse on Wednesday July 18 to call for statewide action to address the lead contamination crisis for children.
The press conference will take place at 10:30 AM In front of Westside Academy at Blodgett, 312 Oswego St.
While lead contamination is a problem statewide, Syracuse is the child lead poisoning capital of the nation. 40% of Syracuse children had blood lead levels between 5 and 10 micrograms per deciliter.
Westside Academy at Blodgett is a symbol of the lack of attention in Syracuse to fixing up old schools. It sits in the middle of a neighborhood with high rates of poverty and lead poisoning. The 100-year-old school was once again denied renovation in the current round of funding by the Joint School Construction Board, even though it is the most dilapidated school in the city.
Hawkins To Participate in End Family Separation March and Rally in New York City
For immediate release: June 29, 2018
Howie Hawkins, the Green candidate for New York governor, will participate in the New York City march and rally to End Family Separation on Saturday, June 30, 2018.
The demonstration will gather at Foley Square at 10:00 am and march across the Brooklyn Bridge to a rally at Cadman Plaza beginning at 11:45 am. The demonstration is one of many taking place in cities across the nation as part of a National Day of Action to Fight for Families.
Hawkins, who called for turning New York into a "Sanctuary State” for immigrants in his 2014 gubernatorial campaign, is again campaigning for New York to enact Sanctuary State policies, including prohibiting New York State agencies from cooperating with federal immigration authorities without a judicial warrant, increased funding for the state’s Liberty Defense Fund to provide immigrants with legal services, passage of the DREAM Act, and drivers licenses for undocumented immigrants.
“Providing a safe harbor for refugees seeking asylum and immigrants seeking opportunity is what the inscription on the plaque on the Statue of Liberty proclaims America should be about," Hawkins said.

Will Join the NYC Protest on June 30 To Support Immigration, Reunification of Families
Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for Governor, denounced Tuesday’s 5-4 Supreme Court decision upholding the so-called Muslim Ban “as yet another action of a rogue Supreme Court that puts reactionary political beliefs ahead of the facts and fundamental constitutional rights.”
Hawkins said the decision grows out of decades of racist, Islamophobic, and xenophobic policies fueled by both major parties, growing out of 9/11, the so-called War on Terror and white nationalist opposition to immigration.
Hawkins, who has long campaigned to turn New York into a “Sanctuary State” for immigrants, said that “providing a safe harbor for refugees is the morally right thing to do, and that in order to enact any reasonable immigration policy we need to get the racist leadership of Trump and Sessions out of office.” Hawkins noted that immigration has always enriched New York’s economy.

Mark Dunlea, the Green Party candidate for State Comptroller, will hold a press conference in Binghamton on Wednesday June 20 at 11:30 AM to announce his candidacy. The event will take place on the north side of the County Court House, 92 Court St., Binghamton NY.
A major focus of his campaign is on climate change, starting with requiring the state pension fund to divest from fossil fuels. Dunlea will be accompanied by Syracuse resident Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate for Governor. Hawkins will discuss the recent entry of former Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner into the gubernatorial race.
Hawkins and Dunlea will discuss the ongoing problems with corruption in the Cuomo administration and in Syracuse during the Miner administration. Cuomo’s top aid was recently convicted for political corruption related to the CPV power plant in Orange County and economic development in Syracuse. Other Cuomo administration officials and donors are presently on trial over the awarding of government contracts as part of the so-called Buffalo Billion. Cuomo convinced the legislature to end the oversight of various state contracts by the state Comptroller before the contracts for the Buffalo Billion were entered into.
The FBI and the Manhattan District Attorney are also investigating the Cuomo administration over the awarding of $25 million in state contracts to Crystal Run right after the health care firm in the Hudson Valley gave Cuomo large campaign donations.
Dunlea was the long-time Executive Director of the Hunger Action Network of NYS. Hawkins is a retired Teamster from UPS.
