Howie Hawkins has been an organizer for peace, justice, labor, the environment, and independent politics since 1967 when he got active in "The Movement" as a teenager in the San Francisco Bay Area. A former Marine, he helped organize opposition to the Vietnam War. In the 1970s and 1980s, he was a leader in the anti-apartheid divestment movement to end US corporate investment in the system of racist labor exploitation in South Africa. He was a co-founder of the anti-nuclear Clamshell Alliance in 1976 and the Green Party in the US in 1984.

The Green Party candidates for statewide office finished in a distant third on election day, but the party still sees some positives in the results.
Gubernatorial candidate Howie Hawkins got nearly 100,000 votes, securing the party's ballot line for the next four years, and doing better than the other two minor party candidates on the ballot.
Mark Dunlea is one of the co-founders of the New York Green Party and the 2018 comptroller candidate.

"Our campaigns have made a difference," Hawkins said. “We put issues on the table that otherwise wouldn’t be discussed."
Hawkins is seeking to push an agenda more so than win office in November.
In his previous bids for governor, Hawkins rallied against the natural gas industry, which he believes led to the state's fracking ban in 2014.
Hawkins is hoping his campaign will have a similar impact in this year.

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) — Green Party nominee, Howie Hawkins, made a stop in Binghamton today to speak about criminal justice reform.
During his stop he spoke about Tuesday night’s debate between Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Marc Molinaro.
“They excluded those of us who are trying to bring real issues to the forefront and instead they had a debate where again, they did not talk about upstate issues. How are we going to redevelop the economy upstate?” said Hawkins.
Hawkins’ and other third party candidates are hoping for another debate, including everyone, ahead of the November 6th election.
At this time, there are no other gubernatorial debates scheduled.

CORNING, N.Y. (WENY) -- With election day nearing one of the New York Gubernatorial candidates took his travels to Corning today. The Green Party representative stopped by Hakes Landfill and then to Market Street to present his agenda to local residents.
Howie Hawkins continues on the path of his campaign trail here in the Southern Tier. After his stop at the landfill, the Syracuse native made his way up and down Market Street hitting up as many businesses and restaurants he could. After politely greeting all who would hear what he had to say, Howie went into the key points of what he stands for including a big increase in solar and wind power, adding clean energy jobs, and working to stop fracking in the Empire State.

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Green Party candidate for New York State Governor, Howie Hawkins, is called for justice reform. Hawkins held a press conference in Binghamton on Wednesday where he outlined his plan to end discrimination against the poor and people of color. First on that list is to eliminate cash bail, which Hawkins says the wealthy can easily pay, while those with lower incomes have no choice but to stay in jail.
"We've got to abolish cash bail and the judge can keep people if they're a threat to public safety," says Hawkins.
The governor candidate also wants to legalize marijuana in the hopes of lowering incarceration rates in New York State and eliminate unjustified delays in trials.
