Green party gubernatorial candidates talks state, local policy in Watertown visit
Watertown Daily Times, August 10, 2018
The Journal (Ogdensburg), August 10, 2018
by Abraham Kenmore
WATERTOWN — Howie Hawkins, Green Party candidate for governor, said it was the party members’ idea, not his, to run again.
“I couldn’t have stopped it if I wanted to,” he said. “It was never my plan to run for all these offices ... I don’t know how many, it’s like 21 times I’ve run. Only one time did I push it, the other times they pushed me.”
Mr. Hawkins’s reluctance is not a mark of a lack of enthusiasm for the party he helped found. If anything, his status as perpetual, if occasionally reluctant, candidate is a mark of dedication.

The Green Party gubernatorial candidate's platform — calling for a bold approach to tackling issues like climate change and soaring healthcare costs — should interest many mid-Hudson Valley residents, he said.
“I think we’re standing with the people,” Howie Hawkins said Thursday, standing at Victor C. Waryas Park in the City of Poughkeepsie. “And even if they don’t consider themselves a lefty, or a progressive, or a socialist, or a liberal, they’re going to like where we stand on the issues... So, I think the sky’s the limit.”
Hawkins, a Syracuse resident who finished third in the 2014 gubernatorial race, said his goal in November's election is clearly stated in his campaign slogan: Demand More. That includes pushing the state to commit to working toward 100 percent clean energy by 2030.
Addressing climate change is among the campaign’s keynote issues, and Hawkins talked about the need for a “Green New Deal” to revitalize the economy by focusing on clean energy initiatives. He also voiced his support for a single-payer healthcare system.

Hawkins says Green New Deal will revive upstate economy
Says Cuomo’s corrupt, trickle-down, pay-to-play economic development as failed
Howie Hawkins the Green Party candidate for Governor, renewed his call for a Green New Deal to increase upstate jobs, wages, and business development. Hawkins also wants to lower property taxes by getting rid of the local property tax cap and replacing it with increased state revenue sharing with local governments.
“Cuomo’s economic development policy of tax cuts and subsidies for the rich and corporations has failed to revive the upstate economy. It’s the old supply-side trickle-down theory that has failed for 40 years. Cuomo has taken it to a new level of pay-to-play corruption, but upstate is still economically depressed,” said Hawkins.
The Green New Deal combines a transition to 100% clean energy by 2030 with targeted public investments directly into the energy, housing, transportation, and water and sewage infrastructure of struggling communities upstate. It will lower the costs of doing business by lowering energy, health care, broadband, and property tax costs to business.
