Support Green Party candidates for a change

Poughkeepsie Journal: October 2, 2018

To the Editor:

In reading the front-page story ("NY races head to November: Partisan campaigns heat up in still-crowded fields") from the Tuesday, Sept. 18 edition of the Poughkeepsie Journal, I was pleased to see that there was mention of the fact that Howie Hawkins is the Green Party candidate for the office of governor in the upcoming election.

It was upsetting that the article failed to mention the fact that the Green Party of New York has a full slate of strong candidates for all of the statewide offices. The article ended with a sub-section titled “Also on the Ballot” where candidates for other statewide offices were mentioned. The Green Party candidates, Jia Lee for lieutenant governor, Mark Dunlea for comptroller, and Michael J. Sussman for attorney general were not included. In my opinion, Jia Lee, Mark Dunlea, and Michael J. Sussman are more qualified for the offices for which they are running than the big money and big “machine” party candidates. Their “Progressive” agenda calls for single-payer health insurance, an accelerated transition to renewable energy sources, and divestiture of state pension funds from fossil fuel enterprises, to name a few.

I agree with the sentiment expressed by Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan as presented in the article, that if the progressive agenda is allowed to be implemented “New York will never be the same.” Of course he meant that more of the same is preferable to change.

I’m for change. The team of Hawkins, Lee, Dunlea and Sussman are the ones to bring on that change.

Cuomo Tells Hawkins to Organize Debates

For immediate release: September 30, 2018

Howie Hawkins, the Green Party nominee for Governor, discussed the issue of Gubernatorial debates at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City on Saturday.

Both Hawkins and Cuomo addressed the crowd on the issue of criminalization of poverty, particularly the need to end cash bail. Gubernatorial candidates Larry Sharpe and Stephanie Miner also spoke.

Backstage, Hawkins approached Cuomo about debates, to which Cuomo replied “what debates?” After Hawkins shared his proposal for debates held in different regions of New York, Cuomo asked “are you going to organize them?”

“If I have to,” Hawkins responded, and so the Hawkins/Lee campaign has accepted the challenge and begun contacting media outlets to discuss sponsorship of the debates.

Hawkins proposes four regional debates (NYC Metro area, Capital District, Central NY and Western NY), each to focus on a topic: The Economy, Government Reform, The Environment and Climate, and Social Policy — including education, health care, criminal justice, and civil rights.

Unlike the primary debate, the rules will be determined by all of the candidates and the media, not just Mr. Cuomo.

Greens: Hawkins, Dunlea in Binghamton Sat Sept. 30 at 3 PM

For immediate release: September 30,2018

NYS Green Party candidates, Howie Hawkins for Governor and Mark Dunlea for Comptroller, will be available for interviews in Binghamton between 3-5 pm at 104 Walnut Street.

Hawkins and Dunlea will be holding a house party,

Howie Hawkins will discuss aspects of the Green Party platform.

According to Hawkins, As Governor I will be an advocate for low-income workers. Throughout the campaign I have outlined democratic socialist solutions: public ownership and democratic control of our energy system. Public broadband. A universal, single-payer healthcare system. And expanded, quality public housing.”

Mark Dunlea, the only progressive candidate running against NYS Comptroller Tom DiNapoli, will talk of the urgency for divesting fossil fuel investments from the NYS Pension Fund.

Marks says,"Investing billions of dollars in companies that are destroying life on our planet is morally wrong. But is also increasingly a bad financial decision, with the fossil fuel industry underperforming the rest of the stock market in recent years. One study shows that NY would have an extra $13 billion in its pension fund if it had divested.”

Let all the candidates be heard in debates

Elmira Star Gazette: September 30, 2018

To the editor:

I am the Green Party candidate for Governor.

Four years ago I finished third with 5% of the vote. Several of the issues I raised such as a ban on fracking, a $15 an hour minimum wage, and paid family leave were at least partially adopted by the Governor after the election.

After the primary debate, which largely ignored upstate New York and many critical issues starting with climate change, I proposed four regional debates (NYC Metro area, Capital District, Central NY and Western NY) to each focus on a topic area: The Economy; Government Reform; The Environment and Climate; and Social Policy, including education, health care, housing, criminal justice, and civil rights.

The debate rules should be determined by all of the candidates and the media and civic organizations, not just Mr. Cuomo. The media and civic organizations should organize the debates and hold them whether or not Cuomo decides to appear.
